SO HOW IS YOUR JOB WORKING FOR YOU?
In the light of everything you have learnt thus far, what is the sense you have about your current job right now? How much of a fit do you feel you have with it?
Making an objective assessment of your situation is key to understanding what to do next. Before you go any further, I would recommend that you do a simple evaluation by asking yourself these four questions:
What do you love about your job?
What don't you mind about your job?
What do you hate about your job?
What talents are NOT being used?
Try and be as specific and detailed as you can. This can relate to any aspect, from what you do, to who you work with.
Now look carefully at the part you hate. Ask yourself this question: Do I hate these things because I am not getting what I want (my talent is frustrated) or do I hate these things because what is expected from me I cannot bring to the table (I feel exposed).
This simple exercise I have just described should help you work out if the way you feel about your job is a result of it being wrong for you or whether you have just gotten stuck focusing on issues in the wrong way. You may even be stuck in a rut and need to challenge yourself again about what what you have to offer.
Regardless of your conclusion, let's face it. It could always be better. Better, in this context is having at least 70% of what you do engage who you are and what you really dislike doing down to at the most 10%. The reality is we all have to do things we don't like doing but we certainly do not need to make a career out of it.
The hardest part now is to first work out whether you should stick it through with what you already have or seriously look at other options. A challenging conundrum!
Now before you decide to quit and walk boldly into the unknown proclaiming, "I am going to live my dream! So long F*@kers" as you zap sign your coworkers on your way out, I need to give you a little more insight into what it means to pivot yourself into a stronger space.
